NHRA Finals – Canadian Photo Extra
NHRA’s season-ending AAA Auto Club Finals featured some very strong performances by Canadian participants. Here is our Fountain Tire photo extra highlighting just some of those results…..
Toronto-native Jeff Arend drove the great looking Mooneyes/Jim Dunn Racing Dodge at Pomona and was rewarded with a season’s best qualifier – 4.067 secs (Nice!) good for #8. Jeff beat Tim Wilkerson in round #1 before losing out to the World Champ – John Force
Regina’s Abe Loewen – who won the AAA Finals last year came close again with a superb 5th round finish in Super Stock eliminator.
Don St. Arnaud ran very fast yet again in TAD hitting multiple 270+ mph speeds before losing out in round #2.
Canada’s Todd Paton drove the Tim Horton’s/Paton Racing dragster at Pomona but just missed the bump with a pretty solid 4.017 secs effort.
The highly prestigious Summit Racing ET Finals at Pomona included two Canadian racers – Mark Simmons (from BC on right) and Chris Stone (from Alberta)
Competition eliminator round one matched up two Canadian racers with Garth Giroux from Alberta (near lane) defeating Ontario province native racer Brian Browell.
The highly popular Worsham Racing/Fountain Tire “Canadiana Dodge” campaigned by Todd & Liz Lesenko was raced at Pomona with Grant Downing at the controls. Grant’s best run of 4.240 secs came on Friday — but missed the field.
Edmonton’s Ken Reich entered his Chevy Cobalt in Comp with Adam Bowdish driving. The car qualified #8 in at -.580.
Manitoba’s Gord Gingles and car owner Clif Bakx made their first attempt ever racing at Pomona in TAD. The team got in the program as an alternate before losing out in Round #1.
Truly good guy Geoff Goodwin (Red Deer AB) raced his Synoil Chevy at Pomona and ran some regular 5.5 secs ETs with Jason Rupert at the controls.
Mission BC is home for Kirk Lanz who entered his JBS Racing Chevy Cavalier in Super Gas
Rick Paton was popular with the fan base at Pomona driving his high-flying SS/AS Camaro from Edmonton.
Canada’s “comeback kid” Shawn Cowie suffered a super narrow 5.394 to 5.391 secs round one defeat to eventual winner Johnny Ahten.
