Team Ferstl on Comeback Trail
Now fully recovered from a rather devastating towing accident back in 2011 — the Calgary-based racing team of Mike & Tracy Ferstl are very close to returning to action…
.
After an extended layoff of close to two years, Ferstl Racing is burning the “midnight oil” to meet a self induced September 2013 scheduled deadline. A few unfortunate circumstances stopped the race team cold in it’s tracks in November 2011 and the again in November 2012 but the time has come to move on. The plan is to participate at the last few events at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton before the door closes on the 2013 drag racing season.
.
“It has been far too long for my liking”, states Mike Ferstl of Calgary, Alberta. “When you are not at the wheel and at the racetrack, you become yesterday’s fodder and very rusty! I am just looking forward to sitting in our new dragster and doing the first few burnouts to get the blood pumping. It’s a rush driving one of these cars and I know what will happen when I take the first turn off at the end of the drag strip. The tears will be flowing and my heart will be pounding.”
.
The Ferstl’s (Mike’s wife, Tracy plays an integral role in the team’s activities) purchased a very good race car from California native and renowned Super Comp racer, Aaron Kinard 18 months ago. Kinard, former NHRA Division 7 champ in Super Comp, drove the Racetech entry to several NHRA national and divisional event wins as well as winning the prestigious NHRA Jeg’s Allstar race in Chicago.
.
“This all got started with purchasing a motor from Aaron several years ago for our ’34 Chevy Super Gas car,” said Ferstl. “The conversation kept going several months later and before we knew it, we were buying Kinard’s dragster. It made a lot of sense at the time because we were looking to go quicker in Bob and Gord Edbertz’ Top Eliminator Edmonton series.” Top Eliminator Edmonton is a fast bracket racing series consisting of 10-12 races per year with cars dipping below 7 seconds and excess of 200 mph in the quarter mile.
.
“We’ll get our feet before the end of the year, see what changes may need to take place and make plans for the 2014 drag racing season over the winter,” stated Ferstl. “I am looking forward to seeing our old friends and mixing it up with them on the track.”
