Season Opening Good Karma for Kopp
Burlington’s Rick Kopp kicks off 2012 season by putting some good Karma in the bank…
This past weekend Rick Kopp took the opportunity to make a deposit into his karma account with the Goodwill Bank after attending a meet and greet with a group from Voices Unlimited on Friday and struggling to find the tune-up that led him to a Quick 32 Series record at the end of last season.
As part of the PMRA, QUICK 32 and PBSS series Victoria Day Weekend Challenge, drivers from the three series’ entertained a group of guests from Voices Unlimited, a self-advocacy group with a vision that all people will be treated and respected equally and fairly within their communities. An appreciative Rick Kopp took part in the meet and greet and had this to say; “It’s just a great feeling to give these people the chance to get up close to the cars. We also have to remember the dedication of the support workers these people have and I can’t say enough about how important it is that we recognize them as well.”
After working late into the evening Friday to get the car ready for Saturday’s qualifying action, Kopp experienced severe tire spin in his first attempt on the famed Cayuga Dragway quarter mile. On his second attempt the car appeared to be on a low six second run, but the time slip provided a different story, showing a 6.55 elapsed time, placing him second in the qualifying order. “The car felt like it was on a good run,” said a confident Kopp. “I know when this thing is making steam and it definitely felt quicker than a 6.55 on that pass.”
Despite a great .030 reaction time on the starting line during his first round contest against Michael Kalin of Niagara Falls, NY, Kopp was defeated when his car ran an identical 6.55 second ET against his 6.40 second dial-in. “We were really confused with the cars performance this weekend given the numbers it produced on the dyno in testing,” mentioned Kopp. “We didn’t feel like we were being that conservative with the tune-up but at least we’ve got a starting point now.”
The next event of the 2012 season for the Kopp Motorsports team is the Summer Showdown, June 8-9, hosted at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, Michigan.
