As Canadian drag racing battles back hard from all the pandemic setbacks – Toronto Motorsports Park rallies….
Ontario’s drag racing fans have for a long time circled their calenders for this coming July 1st long weekend – setting in stone attending something special. For over a decade — and up until last summer — attending the Canadian Nitro Nationals at Cayuga Dragway had become for many a popular and necessary annual tradition.
While a more familiar version for the 2021 Canadian Nitro Nationals has become impossible (again) due to the COVID protection measures imposed by the Ontario Government – a window of opportunity has been opened – albeit and admitedly at a very late stage. Effective with this coming Wednesday, and in line with some new relaxed provincial measures – a “Plan B” alternative feature event for TMP is in the works – for this weekend!
“Right up until 4 days ago – we really couldn’t plan anything,” stated Uli Bieri, Toronto Motorsports Park track owner. “But effective with this Wednesday we are are allowed 25% capacity. We have over 400 acres at our facility – so we want to proceed with a feature event scaled as best as we can. We realize it’s all very last minute – but we’re optimistic that area fans and racers could respond.”
TMP’s 2021 Canada Day Weekend race will put a special emphasis for weekend camping opportunities – with some attractive options being offered for those who have not yet made any plans. And for the racing itself – while exact details are still evolving – the intention is to provide as entertaining and action packed product as possible.
We can confirm that (in addition to the track side bar “Slicks” being open and a fireworks show) Russ Lethbridge’s awesome “Hellfire” Jet-powered Freightliner will be running! The track is also offering attractive terms for any and all area Pro cars (slick equipped) to come and test on a prime and fully prepped track surface. The intention is to offer both Pro Mod as well as a Quick 16 (Top Sportsman & Top Dragster) 100% payout eliminator programs.
Pro testing will be a Friday evening feature followed by qualifying sessions (3X) offered for Saturday — with eliminations run off on Sunday (July 4th).
Saturday will also include a special appearance for the GTA-based CJR Performance group — who will bring in various “modern muscle” cars of all brands for competition.
