A good grouping of Canadian drag racers venture south for the season opening NHRA Lucas Oil Winternationals….

Racing his reliable ’84 Olds GT/NA Rick McKinney (from Richmond BC) – who placed runner-up in Super Stock at the 2019 Winternationals event – had another good attempt at Pomona — but lost to eventual winner Justin Lamb in round #3 on a red-light.

Spruce Grove Alberta’s Don Thomas once again ventured deep in the Super Stock eliminator mix. The veteran driver advanced his very consistent ’04 Pontiac GT/GA to round #4 — but also lost out to event winner Justin Lamb.

After flirting with possible retirement in mid 2019 — Calgary’s Mike Scott is back full time for the NHRA’s M/T Top Fuel Harley category in 2020. His first event out with his totally rebuilt Weekend-chassis machine was however a DNQ.

Alberta’s dynamic Plaizier Racing team entered 3 cars at the event in both S/ST and S/G. Francesca Giroux – who is the defending NHRA Division 6 points champ for S/ST – raced her Camaro to round #2 at Pomona.

Will Yakimetz continued his strong emergence in TS class racing. He qualified his Vegreville AB based Camaro #16 (6.898 secs) and went to the 3rd round in class competition.

Certainly one of the biggest surprise names on the Stock eliminator event entry list was veteran Don Lavoie — who came all the way from Dieppe NB to race his C/SA Vette at Pomona. Don had a good run during eliminations — winning two rounds before losing out to Al Corda.

Regina’s Grant Singer was once again popular with the fans with his high-flying SS/BS ’90 Camaro. Grant qualified with a quick 8.782 secs but was knocked out by fellow Canadian Charlene Gullett in round #2.

Canada’s “Mopar Man” Darcy Clarke once again entered two classic machines. He was the top Canadian qualifier in Super Stock with his SS/EA Savoy — running a 9.437 secs = -.913 under his index – which was 8th on that event list.

Canada’s Shawn Cowie once again grabbed the overall Canadian racer headlines at Pomona — check out this link to our Lucas Oil Hotzone post — details on his most recent win! HERE

Calgary’s Charlene Gullett had another nice run in Super Stock racing. She qualified her ’85 Olds Cutlass in the middle of the pack (#25) and then went to the fourth round in eliminations.

Mike and Jackie Lucas came all the way in from Fort St. John BC to sunny SoCal race their cool Camaro in TS. This time however their event effort was  curtailed by Joe Roubicek in round #2.

Bob Gullett (husband to Charlene) was the top Canadian qualifier in Stock with a stout -1.008 effort in his Chevy Nova. Bob — who has won at Pomona before (2016 Finals) — lost out in round one.

Ray Carlson (from 100 Mile House BC) entered his rather unique topless Corvette in the S/ST class.  That 10.90 index category was presented for the first time ever at the NHRA Lucas Oil Winternationals.
