KHR and CJI present some important late season drag racing tidbits from within the Canadian drag racing scene….
Big Tire – Big Winner! — A salute to Abbotsford BC racer John De Jonge who collected a pretty lucrative score during the recent 14th Annual Street Car Super Nationals event held at Las Vegas. Racing his brand new car (expertly built by Kelowna’s RH Race Cars) John emerged the winner in that event’s “Big Tire – No Time” competition – a special added shootout where racers are given win lights only (no displayed elapsed times). Racing his truly immaculate Artex Barn Solutions Camaro — John qualified #1 for that (ET unknown LOL!) and won four rounds of competition to collect a cool $10G from presenting sponsor Hughes Performance.
Dialed in Dal! — Popular left coast “Blue Oval” brand racer Dal Sangha (from Surrey BC) enjoyed a very rewarding trip to the SCSN race at Las Vegas (Nov. 15-18th). During the course of that weekend – the highly dedicated driver notched a slew of career best elapsed times racing his twin-turbo Ford Hemi powered 2010 Mustang. While competing in the event’s Precision Turbo Pro Modified category – Del got the car into the “fives” for the very first time and did that multiple times ( X4 )! Using skilled Kenny Lutz as a tuning consultant, Dal’s best run was a 5.852 secs at 255.82 mph which qualified him mid pack in the P/M eliminator — and which loaded him up with future optimism.
Bull Put to Pasture! — We’ve all heard inklings of this rumor all season but some reality has now set in. The ultra competitive “The Bull” injected nitro car owned and operated by Southern Manitoba’s Clif Bakx has been sold off. Bakx who won a slew of events and NHRA regional titles with his drivers Gord Gingles and Todd Bruce has confirmed he is taking some time away from the TAD class and his operation has been sold to Arizona’s Mike Burns. Clif will now focus the majority of his time to his successful business (Tri-Star Dairy Services) but admits he will still play in drag racing a bit (with a Top Dragster class car that he continues to own). We would not however rule out that Clif will resurface elsewhere within NHRA’s TAD category at some point as a hired consultant.
Fast Street Car Streaks! — Eastern Canada’s thriving fast street car scene featured some “deja vu” this past racing season courtesy of Nino Meglio (top) and Pano Moros – both from the GTA. Both Meglio and Moros had successful series title defences racing within the OSCA/Drag Syndicate series — which hosted four events last season. Meglio raced his tried and true Corvette to a first place finish in EZ Street championship points for the 2nd straight season while Moros completed a “natural hat trick” with his cool and very proven ’70 Tempest – prevailing for the Super Street crown for the 3rd straight year. Coincidentally — Pano is a avid hockey player — with his position being a goaltender. (When was the last time a goalie scored a hat trick? — LOL!)
