Interesting recent results and major future prospects from and for Canada’s dynamic drag racing community….
On The Horizon — Alberta’s Chevy Reeves is on the cusp of another significant step within his drag racing career process. Chevy, who is son to ‘loved local legends’ – former RAD Torque Raceway track owners Rob & Kimberley Reeves, and also the current operations manager for that facility, as well as being already an accomplished racer, has revealed another major development forward. In 2025, he will be jumping into the mix for drag racing’s highly popular Street Outlaws No Prep Kings series. Expectations are that with his new ride, a beastly 1970 Chevelle, aptly named ‘THE YETI’, Chevy will take that series by storm!
That race car, inspired by the mythological winter creature of the North, was meticulously crafted by Cameron Johnson Race Cars in Lakeland, Florida, specifically for the No Prep Kings series. The ‘YETI’ is a powerhouse on wheels, featuring a Pro Line Racing MH7 billet Hemi engine that churns out an astonishing 3,400-3,500 HP. Equipped with a ProCharger F4-140-1 supercharger and an M&M Transmission’s Turbo 400 transmission — this car is built for speed and performance. The Chevelle prominently boasts carbon-fiber doors and a front clip from Glasstek, along with top-of-the-line safety equipment from White Safety Equipment. The YETI Chevelle is scheduled to arrive in Alberta soon (in early September) to begin testing, as Chevy begins to make ready to chase the Street Outlaws No Prep Kings series across the NA continent in 2025, bringing not only some Canadian participation to the series, but moving his lifelong dedication and competitive spirit to the forefront of the racing world.
PDRA Prominance — The Red Line Oil-presented PDRA Championship series event stop at Michigan’s U.S. 131 Motorsports Park did include Canadian racer headline making. Within the highly competitive Pro Junior Dragster category — it was young gun KHR team racer “Flyin’ Ryan Harris remaining in “full season flight” for that category winning his third major PDRA event in a row! Ryan, (from Burford ON) after qualifying #17 for the massive 32-car eliminator which features a 7.90 index, mowed down the Northern Nationals program with yet another display of expertise driving and race car consistency. Ryan kept his impressive consecutive round win streak alive in the (Coolshirt Systems Pro Jr. Dragster presented by Philadelphia Racing Products) championship final by delivering a .016 reaction time and running a 7.978 secs get the win over Demi Cox’s quicker 7.957 secs. Ryan – who remains the only Canadian racer in competition for the PDRA Pro Junior category currently sits 2nd in the standings with 1946 points which is just behind leader Ashley Franklin (1961 points).
The Michigan PDRA stop also included another impressive performance during qualifying for Markham Ontario’s Nick Agostino, easily arguably Canada’s premier Pro Street class car racer. Racing his fan favourite “Cannuli Express” turbocharged ’69 Camaro, Nick was the quickest car overall on the premises (and the only 3-secs runner during qualifying) following a blistering 3.939 secs to nail down the pole over 16 other event entries. Agostino did win in round one over fellow Canadian Tony Piselli (from Woodbridge ON) but lost out to eventual winner Maryland’s Brian Weddle in round two.
Western NY Winner! — The Pro Bike & Sled Series (PBSS) was part of the recent NEOPM feature race held at Empire Dragway (Leicester NY).
That eliminator featured a nice win for Canadian Josie Brooks (from Arkona, Ontario). Josie commanded her 1997 GSXR 750 Pro Bike to a final round performance of 4.96 seconds at 135.99 mph (4.95 dial-in) to defeat a Pro Sled 2013 Arctic Cat raced by Bob Salerno from Utica, NY. Josie Brooks led the Pro Bike & Sled Series field into eliminations with the #1 qualifying time of 4.931 seconds at 138.76 mph.
With one race left within the Pro Bike & Sled Series (PBSS) season championship points chase (coming up Sep. 13/14 – also at Empire Dragway), it is US-based racer Lee Burgess leading with 470 points, followed closely by Jose Brooks in second place with 460 points.
Upcoming Cyber Attack! — Fans attending the recent WDRA Canadian Nationals at Grand Bend Motorplex did get a first ever look at a brand new Canadian Pro Mod car – debuted there by Kitchener’s Kevin Gauld. Kevin did not enter the event’s Pro Mod eliminator – but instead was able to make some initial first hits with the car under ideal track prep conditions.
Gauld’s very family and friend orientated team car – dubbed “Cyber Attack” — is an all new 6th generation Five Star Body Ford Mustang build over a Webber Chassis (Breslau ON). The motor program is a BAE 526 HEMI outfitted with F4 Pro-charger and dual Atomizer injectors/cylinder.
Gauld’s immediate plans are to continue some early testing to work out any bugs and build a good dataset for his team to work forward with.
“Next year we are planning to compete at local events at GBM, TMP as well as Napierville Dragway,” Kevin stated. “It’s also possible we will be making an appearance at a track in Western Canada next summer. Our hope is to help build up the Pro Mod class in Canada and try and attract more racers and spectators to events across Ontario and Quebec. We are not ruling out making entry into one of the programs in the USA — but our first full season intent will be within Canada.”
