Saskatoon, Saskatoon (January 17, 2011) – Saskatchewan International Raceway, a drag racing facility located near Saskatoon, SK, announced today that it has received the 2010 National Hot Rod Association (“NHRA”) Northwest Division Summit Racing Series Track of the Year. The award was presented by NHRA Northwest Division Director Jonathan Adams at the Division’s annual Champions Banquet held at the Tulalip Resort Casino near Everett, Washington on January 8th. The annual Champion’s banquet recognizes the outstanding performance of individual racers, crew chiefs and racing facilities over the past season.

The award is presented annually to an NHRA Northwest Division member track that has developed a highly successful Summit Racing Series program at its facility and whose racers have been successful racing within their NHRA geographical division. The NHRA Northwest Division includes the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and also Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana in the USA. Of the seventeen NHRA member tracks within the Northwest Division, eight were eligible for the Summit Racing Series Track of the Year Award in 2010. This is the first time that SIR has won an award such as this in its forty-four year history as a member track of the NHRA.

In addition to this award, three racers from SIR were also in attendance to receive awards for their 2010 achievements: Walter Fernets of Biggar, SK who finished in first place in the Super Pro class in the Division’s Land of the Leaders series; Kurt Schultz of Warman, SK who finished in first place in the Super Pro class in the Division’s National Open Series; and Andy Closkey of Quesnel, BC who travels east and attends races at SIR, for his win in the Pro class at the Division’s Summit Series Finals in Mission BC this past September.

The Summit Series Track of the Year award was accepted by SIR track Manager Shawn Zezula. Zezula has been track manager for ten years and feels that SIR is very deserving of the award, stating that he is “very proud of the recognition SIR received as well as of the distinguished accomplishments of its racers.”

Trevor Jacek, president of the Saskatchewan Drag Racing Association (“SDRA”), which owns and operates SIR, echoed Zezula’s comments, stating “It is great for our track to get divisional recognition. Over the past several years our organization’s members and sponsors have worked together to improve the quality of our facility and our racing programs and we look forward to improving our reputation again in 2011 with a record number of events at SIR.”

The 2011 SIR racing season runs from May 1st to September 25th.
