Saskatchewan International Raceway hosts satisfying celebration event.….
On August 15th — Saskatoon-area SIR presented its largest drag racing event feature ever, when the track welcomed close to 6,000 fans, setting an all-time venue attendance record!
A terrific mix of machinery from all across Western Canada did attend — producing both exciting runs and some track record mathematics.
A few highlights from the unforgettable day of racing did include Clif Bakx’s “The Bull” injected nitro car (from Manitoba-below photo) which reset both ends of SIR’s 1/4 mile track standard with a blistering 5.612 ET at 264.04 MPH!
Racing (exhibition format) encompassed a wide variety — including Jet-powered, nitro and alcohol-burning Funny Cars.
Alberta’s Cory Kincaid ran his Mustang-bodied “Nitro Militia” nostalgia Funny Car.
Pro Mod class racing did include some of the area’s heavy hitter cars, with eight teams present to support the event – including names like Scott Blake (below photo) and Sander Spelt.
The weekend did also mark a huge milestone moment for SIR Track Manager Shawn “Skippy” Zezula who was honored for 25 years of relentless hard work managing the track.
Saskatchewan International Raceway (located 13 km south of Saskatoon) is in fact the oldest active drag racing track for Western Canada. The track first opened named as Southwinds Dragway (in 1966), built and managed by founder Les Howard.
After being run as a private venture for a couple decades, the Saskatchewan Drag Racing Association took over running the track in 1993 from the Howard family and has operated it since.
