Left coast Canadian powerhouse racers Cowie Racing end 2019 season at the top of their game….
Despite some disappointment that came during the month of October when it became official that Shawn Cowie’s talented Mundie’s Towing race team (Surrey BC) would again be bridesmaids for NHRA’s coveted Lucas Oil World Championship title — they did get over missing that prime objective in style.
Instead of conceding the rest of the season — they caught fire and won in rapid fire succession the two final major NHRA events of the 2019 season.
During the week preceding last weekends AAA Auto Club Finals at Pomona — Cowie won the NHRA’s Western Regional Lucas Oil race held at Las Vegas – to once again retain that prestigious geographical championship title. That event win was the 29th career time his team has scored at that level of racing — and it also completed a perfect undefeated season for his team which is owned by his father Ron Cowie and guided mechanically by reputed tuner Norm Grimes.
And that win at Las Vegas certainly turned up the momentum wick — because just 7 days after it was parlayed into another headline victory at the AAA Auto Club Finals. That was their 5th win at the NHRA national event level this year and remarkably it also book-ended their sensationally successful season that included winning 2019’s opening event (Lucas Oil Winternationals) last February — at Pomona too.
During the Finals – Shawn qualified #6 (5.274 secs) before beating Jackie Fricke, James Stevens and Casey Grisel to advance to the championship round. Then in that race — Shawn got a relatively easy win when his opponent Chris Demke fouled out – while Cowie sped to the finish line in 5.275 secs at 277.09 mph.
The win also did give additional creedence to some apparent team ownership of the fabled Auto Club Raceway Pomona. For the TAD category, they have now won at that track 5X in total — the Winternationals (3X) and now the AAA Auto Club Finals event twice.
So in the end, the 2019 season saw Shawn finish second in final NHRA Lucas Oil World Championship points. His points total of 743 placed behind Megan Meyers’ 808 and ahead of 3rd place finisher Troy Coughlin Jr.
Shawn Cowie and company have now finished #2 in final NHRA Lucas Oil World Championship points – 3 times in their career and 3 years consecutively. And while their 2019 season certainly speaks for itself — because of that very fact of coming so close so many times — we are convinced that for this determined team — it is not only a momentum builder — but also presents a very real clear and present danger to North America’s TAD class competition for 2020.
