NHRA’s Pep Boys Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway again includes superb Canadian participation….
A “tip of the hat” to all at Chatterson Racing (Brantford Ontario) who had an excellent event running in the TAD class category at Maple Grove. Driver Jeff Chatterson went to the semi final round before losing out – including recording a very impressive 5.262 secs ET — while winning in round #2.
Dan Velenosi (from Binbrook ON) was #1 on the qualifying list for Super Stock over 60 other competitors. Dan flew his SS/BA ’69 Camaro to a 8.778 secs which is a whopping 1.112 sub index for the class. Dan did however lose out in round #2 of eliminations.
Eric Latino (from Whitby ON) entered his 3rd career NHRA event in Pro Stock. Eric qualified the GESi Camaro #15 with a 6.572 secs but lost on a red-light foul in round one to Troy Coughlin Jr.
Super Gas 9.90 racing at Maple Grove was represented by two cool machines from Eastern Canada with Rick Stroud’s 27T from Douglas ON (top) and Richard Grenier’s Quebec City-based ’33 Willys entered. Both drivers exited eliminations after round #2.
Ontario’s Ryan Stack drove another event for legendary car owner Larry Dobbs in the TAFC class. Ryan qualified #10 (5.711 secs) but had a red-light foul in round one to lose out to eventual event champion Sean Bellemeur.
Quebec’s Michel Bastien went the furthest any Canadian did in eliminations – getting four win lights and advancing all the way to the T/S final round! Bastien ran a 7.015 secs (7.00 dial in) in the final but was edged out by George Forester (from PA).
Venice Perno (from Hamilton ON) ran strong with his SS/CS 2010 Mustang – going to the fourth round in competition. Venice (who is the owner of Performance Cellar – Stoney Creek) qualified 13th before losing out to SS class stalwart Dan Fletcher – who did go on to win the Pep Boys Nationals event.
Daniel Mercier gave Top Fuel racing another go at Maple Grove Raceway. Daniel clocked a rock solid quick 3.743 secs to qualify 11th – but did lose out to Shawn Langdon during the first frame of TF eliminations on Sunday.
Jeff Veale, from Canfield ON., who was the defending event champion (2022) – qualified #13 (5.370 secs). Jeff did however bow out to Jackie Fricke in round #1.
Al Kenny, a native of Kingston ON., was the #1 qualifier for Top Dragster – with his 6.103 secs pacing the big field. Surprisingly however, Al lost out in round #2 at this years event.
Gerard Millette (from St-Etienne-des-Gres Quebec) had his showstopping ’63 Corvette entered in TS. Gerard, after qualifying #11 of 18 cars entered, had a red-light loss in round one.
