British Columbia’s Darryn O’Connor earned a very impressive title during last weekend’s NHRA Lucas Oil Divisional race held in Las Vegas…..
The Fort St. John-based racer drove his now reconfigured and new look 2004 Chevy Cavalier to victory over a very competitive and very prestigious Top Sportsman class category. O’Connor ran a perfect 7.320 secs (7.32 dial in) at 178.10 mph in the championship final to run down opponent Mike Ferderer, who ran a 7.391 secs at 187.00 mph.
Darryn’s big win came over a rather massive 48-car field of qualifiers. After qualifying about the middle of the pack (#22 @ 7.269 secs) he used great consistency while winning rounds one thru four to earn a semi final round bye into the championship round.
The Las Vegas Divisional event almost featured an all Canadian final round too. Edmonton’s Randy Modersohn, driving a ’63 Corvette, made it all the way to the semi final round before being denied there by Ferderer.
