Iconic Cayuga Dragway @ Toronto Motorsports Park – Labour Day Spectacular highlights….

As it has throughout it’s long history — Cayuga Dragway’s Labour Day weekend event attraction was action packed — with a program schedule jam-packed featuring  Nostalgia Funny Cars, exhibition Jets and Wheelstander, Gassers, Pro Mod cars, and a full field of bracket racers. The event also featured the season points concluding rounds for the Can/Am Stock/Super Stock series.

>44 entries lined up for round one of Can/Am S/SS on Saturday and in the end it was veteran Al Allison (from Niagara-On-The-Lake) wheeling his third gen Camaro to and impressive victory. Allison outran Sam Capizza’s Dodge Daytona in the championship round.

Al Allison was a popular winner for the Can-Am Stock/SS event held on Saturday.

> A gaggle of attending Gassers produced a final round with two of our American friends running for the title. Bill Curtis in the “Clown Car” defeated the wheel-standing 55 Chevy of Dave Grant.

> RCSS Bracket action saw Mike Cukrovani seal the deal in Mod, Joe and Robin Ferrari took Super Pro with their clean roadster, “Daddy Dave” Marvin wheeled his daughter’s Monte to the win in Street, and Darren “Bull Whip” Johnson was bike champ. In Jr Dragster an up and comer in the form of Datson Sones won over another one to watch, Port Dover’s Gage Holt.

Robin Ferrari took a RCSS Super Pro title.

> Saturday’s evening feature show began with the Nostalgia Alky Funny Cars who did not disappoint! Paul Noakes wheeling the “Wheeler Dealer” Nova flopper took on the Frantic Ford of the Sweetman family. “Noaksie” laid down a 6.49 @ 210 to defeat the Mustang’s 6.71 @ 210. Next pair included the “Generation X” Vega of Matt and Robin Stambaugh against the beautiful “Iron Outlaw” Corvette steered by Jami Russell. Russell hit a troubling 7.06 @ 191 to distance the Vega’s off pace 7.51 @ 189.

Paul Noakes was just one of a cool “gaggle” of Nostalgia Funny Cars featured for Cayuga Dragway’s Labour Day Spectacular race.

> Muscle cars were next up with the CJR Hellcat and Durango putting on the smoke show that only they seem to be able to produce followed by nine second passes. Small block stick Fords belonging to J. Misner, Gary Quill, and the Stephans brothers, Chad and Damien showed the fans what a blast it is to shift your way down the drag strip with gear-jamming passes.

> The fan favourite Double A Gassers of the True North Gassers showed what drag racing used to be. The ’33 Willys of John and Aaron Reid are the front runners in this category along with the Fred Missall ’51 Dodge, Andrew Kimber in the Henry J, the Kirker Bros. Austin and Brian Spottsin the worlds quickest steel body Anglia.

> Rick Ream in the “World’s Fastest Stude Fire Truck” Wheelstander performed his patented display of showmanship and pyro. The crowd ate it up.

> Saturday’s show night capped off with Cayuga’s own — Neale Armstrong — in his “Northern Warrior” jet dragster facing the “Sonic Assassin” jet digger of Rob Horner in a side-by-side flam-throwing affair.

Jay Santos was again on a record pace while winning the Pro Mod title at Cayuga.

> Sunday included the eliminations for Pro Mod*. That class saw Jay Santos (from Halton Hills ON) continue his amazing class propensity within Eastern Canada – racking up another impressive (and record setting) win. (*Editor’s Note – full Pro Mod results & details from Cayuga will be posted separately – coming soon).

> Cayuga Dragway’s home brand Outlaw Fast 16 class was also featured over the weekend. New York-state based Cayuga regular Mike Kalin with his Pro-Charged dragster was the only entrant in the 3-secs zone with a 3.86 @ 189 qualifier. But when the dust settled “Tunnel Ram” Timmy Knight lined up his blown dragster against the ex Gary Irving ’38 Chevy now owned and steered by Mike Wagg. Wagg got his most deserving first event win with that car when Knight left too soon resulting in a red light.

Mike Wagg’s super cool ’38 Chevy got a big win in the Outlaw Fast 16 class.

Sunday’s Can/Am Stock/Super Stock was again well attended with local expert engine builder Rob Becker taking the event title over JC Hutchison in a Camaro V. Coronet matchup. Rob was driving Bill Craft’s COPO.
