The Eastern portion of the NHRA John Scotti Canadian Championship series wraps up at Toronto Motorsports Park…

Racing competition was both intense and consequential last weekend as the 2025 season chase for the NHRA John Scotti Canadian Championship series came to fruition and decided champions (**).

It was the second visit of the season for the series to TMP and the two-day “double header” (Sep. 26-27) marked the end for the 14-race 2025 season run.

A solid field of entries once again were featured – producing both some impressive repeat and also first time winners.

The series’ anchor Stock/Super Stock Combo class — included a second National Open title for local racer Dean Moggach (from Dundas, ON) who duplicated his winning effort from Napierville earlier this summer in his GT/GA Camaro. Moggach ran down (CHU series founder and director) Ian Hill for Friday’s title winning with a 9.831 secs (9.83 dial in) to Ian’s breakout 9.852 secs (9.87 dial in).

Ontario’s Dean Moggach (above) and Doug Box collected hard fought wins for Stock/Super Stock combo racing at the John Scotti Canadian Drag Racing Series season finale.

Saturday’s schedule included another very popular winner with London’s Doug Box (a director within the Can-Am Stock/SS circuit) taking home the win with his high-flying AA/SA ’69 Camaro. Doug’s final round 10.174 secs (10.17 dial) ran down New York’s John Cira who broke out in the final (10.664 secs – 10.67 dial in).

NHRA’s index class racing produced victory lane visits for Ontario’s Eric Stroud (S/G) and Kirk Parry on Friday and for Mike Lomas (Elma NY) in S/G and Jay Snell S/ST (Caledonia ON) – on Saturday.

The event included a popular addition with the area’s Nostalgia Super Stock class racers competing again for NHRA Wallys – within the series. Canadian Mopar cars proved to be dominate — with Mike Guild’s ’68 Barracuda and then Chris Leeder’s ’65 Plymouth prevailing for titles – Friday and Saturday respectively.

Nostalgia Super Stock class racing featured wins for the Mopar cars of Chris Leeder (top) and Mike Guild.

Cayuga’s immensely successful RCSS ET racing program (Race Cayuga Sportsman Series) was again part of the backbone for the weekend with wins going to Jamie Camp (Super Pro) – Don McCuaig (Modified) – DJ Raisier (Street) – Bob Rock (Bike/Sled) and Yohanna Thompson (Junior Dragster) – for the Sep 26 event. The next day produced repeat wins for both Jamie Champ (Super Pro) and DJ Raisier (Street) while Mason Potter took a Modified title. Carter Daniels – who placed R/UP the day before was the winner in Junior Dragster.

Jamie Champ (Georgetown ON) went undefeated at Cayuga – winning both days for RCSS Super Pro racing.

Oshawa’s Mike Konopacki — who will be heading for the NHRA Summit Racing ET Finals at Las Vegas later in the month as a Canadian representative — was the winner for Bike/Sled on Saturday. Mike defeated fast rising star Canadian racer Brandon Satchell (London ON) in that final when Brandon had a red-light foul.

Two of Canada’s very best Motorcycle drag racers – Mike Konopacki and Brandon Satchell met for the Sled/Bike event title.

A new and major cog for weekend racing was a melding of competition for the Fast Eddie Apparel-presented Top Dragster/Top Sportsman Combo titles. Both those races featured entries from the JSOCCS as well as from the area’s Quick 32 series – possibly presenting a preview for more things to come in 2026.

Paul Coull was a fan favourite winner with his T/S supercharged 1953 Chevrolet Corvette from Princeton, ON. Paul ran that ex-Kenny Lang owned machine to a 4.474 secs 142.35 mph lap to defeat series rookie Ryan Harris, driver of the KHR Top Dragster from Burford, ON., who posted a 4.003 secs, 146.65 mph pass.

Paul Coull’s “super cool” Corvette won the TD/TS Combo on Friday – while Rob Gray prevailed for a win on Saturday.

Saturday’s racing saw Rob Gray from Salford, ON, driving the “Wilson and Gray” 706 CID powered Chevy Cavalier Top Sportsman entry run a 4.408 secs, 161.15 mph eliminating Top Dragster class winner and newly crowned 2025 Quick 32 series champion Rich & Karen Yacos (from Cambria NY) who posted a 4.294 sec 165.26 mph effort.

Congrats to Cayuga track regulars Rich & Karen Yacos (from Cambria NY) who have now clinched the Quick 32 Sportsman series season title.

“It was a fast and successful concluding weekend overall,” said Glenn Grow NHRA Canadian director. “We enjoyed having the Nostalgia Super Stock guys — some really nice cars there!  We also had enhanced participation and new winners in TD/TS Combo — a really fast field with tight racing.  We were happy with that experiment — joining up with Bruce Mehlenbacher and his group. The result was the best turn out yet for that category for TMP!”

**DragRaceCanada will post details for the final 2025 John Scotti Canadian National Open series champions – coming a bit later. Each of those champions will be recognised within the next Canadian Drag Racing Hall of Fame Gala – in Montreal in November.
