Saskatoon’s Mike Gonziola dominates Castrol Raceway Pro Mod feature….
The second round of the season for the Belair Power & Production Equipment-presented WCPM series was a one-sided affair with Saskatchewan’s Mike Gonziola — owning the event.
Racing his nitrous-injected C7 — Mike was the quickest and fastest car during the Pro Mod class portion held in conjunction with the recent NHRA National Open at Castrol Raceway – July 9-11th.
Mike ran a final round 3.925 secs at 194.55 mph to defeat the defending 2020 WCPM champion, Dean Bettenson’s Chevy Camaro, which slowed to a 5.333 secs at 95.91 mph in the Saturday evening conclusion.
“Gonzi” had qualified #1 for the 7-cars entered at Edmonton running a 3.882 secs. He then recorded both low ET and top speed of the meet in a tell-tale single in round one – 3.846 secs and 195.82 mph before topping Regina’s Dan Vogt in the semi-final round.
Bettenson, who is from Red Deer AB, had notched victories over Edmonton-area racers Wade Sjostrom and Tom Reithmayer while advancing to the final round.
This WCPM race at Edmonton was presented by associate sponsor DY Concrete Pumps. The series now heads back to Mission Raceway for it’s next event (July 30-August 1st) the Artex Racing Summer Shootout – but does return back to Edmonton in mid-August for another round (Aug. 14-15th).
Editors Note: DragRaceCanada will post results highlights from the rest of the NHRA National Open at Edmonton – coming soon.
