A long time Canadian drag racing participant does it …. “One More Time”……

Eastern Canada’s mainstay circuit for NHRA legal Stock and Super Stock racers (Can-Am Stock/SS Association) is and has been both an effective breeding ground for emerging new racers as well as a convenient playground for those who are versed.

Al Allison (from Niagara-On-The-Lake) — who has a very storied background within Canadian drag racing – is using the series to stage a comeback.

After purchasing a 1982 Camaro Z28 from Bill Wallace in 2019 — Al has emerged again as a popular fixture for the series – while developing his car at select events over the past two summers.

“This is a FJ Smith-built chassis and I run a 1969 Chevrolet 350 CID 300 HP combination with a Powerglide transmission,” Al revealed. “The Camaro weighs 3060 lbs and last season it went a best of 9.78 secs at 139 mph. The motor is from Rob Carpenter Racing — it’s a Joe Fioravanti build. Dan “The Sign Man” Delaney applied the expert lettering.”

The high flying “One More Time” Camaro has been a popular new addition within Eastern Canada’s Can-Am Stock/SS racing community.

Al’s drag racing scrapbook is teeming full of some memorable entries and dating back to 1969. After starting out with a M/S Pontiac, that was followed by a progression of cars. That portfolio includes two model Camaro (a 1968 and a 1969) Stock eliminator cars, a Super Stock 1966 Impala and a 1966 Chevy II. Allison ran very successfully a series of three different RE dragsters – which he raced in both Quick 8 and Super Comp (8.90) index divisions. With those he did tally a IHRA Divisional points title and was also a Quick 8 Track Champion (at NY’s Lancaster Dragway) during that phase of his racing career. Allison also tried his hand with a super cool 1933 Willys which was raced in Quick Sportsman.

After taking a number of years sabadical — Al made his decision to come back to the sport with this very high flying GT/GA class Camaro – which he ran for the first time during late 2019.

“I guess I decided I wanted to “look at the sky again”, he laughed. “The Can-Am Stock/SS Series is such a great group of people, including fun camaraderie, it was a perfect fit for a comeback. I did name the car — “One More Time” — due to thinking this may be my last drag car (?)”

Al has both enjoyed and taken good advantage of his return – cumulated with a superb 3rd place finish in final Can-Am Stock/SS season points – last year.

Born in 1952, Al’s career was running a very successful Auto Repair Business. He is married to wife Marjorie, and has two sons, Bob & Mike and two granddaughters.

Coming for 2022: Al’s objectives currently include targeting another high finish within the Can-Am Stock/SS circuit, attending some of the NHRA Northeast’s PC Richard National Open events as well as some cross border racing (when permissible) for NHRA Lucas Oil Divisional dates.

“I couldn’t be back where I am now without the support of my pit crew – wife Marjorie and friend Leo Argenta,” Al emphasized. “A special thanks too to my fellow racing neighbours – Wally Clark and Chuck Nagy!”
