CMDRA Round 2 Recap
Some of the best racers in Canadian Motorcycle drag racing were on hand for the CMDRA’s 2nd round of the season which was part of last weekend’s “Harleys by the Beach” event held at Grand Bend Motorplex….
Warm temperatures brought out large crowds in search of sun and drag racing entertainment this Father’s Day weekend.
In a repeat of round one, the Screamin’ Eagle V-Rod Destroyer Eastern Series featured another semi final father and son showdown between Burlington’s Pete Thomson aboard his Rocky’s Harley Davidson machine and Dan Thomson of Stoney Plain Alberta. Showing no sentimental attachment to Father’s Day, Dan took the victory with his Kitchener Harley Davidson sponsored bike and relegated his dad to the role of spectator, while he moved on to lineup against Owen Sound’s Chris Fox and the Fox Harley Davidson Racing team in the final elimination round.
Fox, who defeated Yellowknife’s Jeff Pitre in the first round of eliminations and moved into the finals with a second round bye, was coming off record setting runs in the first round of the season and showed no signs of letting up, leaving Thomson with the challenge of taking the victory at the tree. Cutting a 0.012 second light gave Thomson a 0.062 second advantage which combined with a 9.365 second quarter mile ET at 139.06 MPH, against Fox’s 9.345 second 138.91 MPH run, to give Thomson his first trophy of the season.
In the Screamin’ Eagle Top Fuel Harley class, reigning CMDRA Top Fuel Champion and 2012 UEM Superbike Twin Champion, Nate Gagnon, thrilled fans in attendance with a series of dominant six second, 200 MPH passes on his Big Kids Racing Nitro Harley enroute to collecting his first 2014 CMDRA trophy.
Up next, the Screamin’ Eagle V-Rod Destroyer Eastern Series returns to the Grand Bend Motorplex for Round 3 on June 21st and 22nd, while the CMDRA kicks of the Western season at Edmonton’s Castrol Raceway on June 22nd.
