“Double Payday” for McVey

Winnipeg’s Scott McVey enjoyed his finest hour yet in his drag racing career during last weekends NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event held at Tri-State Raceway in Kansas….

The determined Top Alcohol Funny Car racer won not one but two titles during that event – including what was in fact his first ever NHRA national event “Wally”.

In Sunday’s final eliminations for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series race McVey faced off against Iowa’s Dale Brand, and posted a winning run of 5.718 seconds, 252.90 mph in his ’06 Monte Carlo.  Brand hit a losing 5.986 second, 249.26 mph when his car got loose and moved around all over the track. That allowed McVey to drive away to take the win.

Scott had qualified for that 6-car field #6 and upset Andy Bohl (the pole qualifier) in round one of competition.

McVey’s win on Sunday was however preceded by a even higher profile victory on the Saturday evening after he won the rain delayed Alcohol Funny Car final round for the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals held in Brainerd, MN., (originally scheduled for Aug. 17th).

That final also featured a head to head match against Dale Brand with Brand’s car having a similar fate — getting out of the racing groove. McVey hit a winning 5.796 secs at 250.55 mph for the Lucas Oil Nationals title — his first career win at the NHRA national event level.

McVey’s final round win for the national title had been preceded by round wins over Kris Hool, Annie Whiteley and Nancy Matter all back at Brainerd in August prior to the arrival of the rain.
