It was dejavu for Kevin Wicke and the K&K / CVR Race Team this past weekend on the Cayuga Dragway at Toronto Motorsports Park.
Running in the last event of the Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts, the team was less than one round out of top spot. Last season the team managed to overcome the deficit to claim the championship, and 2010 was no different.
By the end of the event the team had claimed its second consecutive title by a mere two points over the Top Dragster of Scott Wildgust from Wartburg, Ontario.
With only two events left in the six-race season Wicke was on the outside looking in sitting in fifth position. After a semi-final finish in Grand Bend he moved up to third and trailed leader Wildgust by one round. After picking up a couple valuable qualifying points in the last event Wicke was only 18 points out of the lead (20 points per round) and still had a chance at the championship.
“We went into the last race thinking we had to win the race to win the points. As it turned out we had a little help on the other side of the ladder and were able to finish on top again,” said Wicke.
One of the key race wins for Wicke was the second-round match-up with Steve Parkhurst of Belleville, Ontario. Parkhurst was two points ahead of Wicke in the standings and a loss would have knocked them out of the chase. “We just took one round at a time,” said Wicke. “The teams in this series are some of the best and we feel very fortunate to repeat our victory.”
In the Top Sportsman final Wicke faced Dan Aitken Jr. of Belle River for the second race in a row. Unfortunately the team was unable to put Aitken on the trailer in either race.
“He is a tough racer and I did not do my job in both races,” Wicke noted. “After clinching the championship the previous round I was a little too relaxed and it showed on the light. I feel bad for the guys; I know they really wanted to end the season with a win.”
The season is not over for the K&K / CVR Team. They will travel to Columbus, Ohio next weekend for the JEG’S Sports Nationals. This is a NHRA Event and will attract some of the top racers in the United States.
The K&K / CVR Team is supported by family and friends as well as its partners CVR Inc., Fraser Asphalt Paving, Bear’s Performance Products, Skully Bros. Metal Fabrication, Perth Auto Dismantlers, Ron’s Precision Machine, Hutch’s Transmission, Patio Passport and Fram Canada.
The PMRA and Quick 32 Sportsman Series Championship Point Award Series winners will be honored at the “Night of Champions” Saturday, November 13, 2010 at The Best Western Cairn Croft Hotel in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
