Post Season Review!

Zappia Racing raced three series in the 2018/2019 racing season, racing at four tracks in Australia. John finished second in the 400 Thunder IHRA Championship behind Paul Mouhayet and was the only racer to win two Finals in the hotly contested season. Zappia also finished second in the local Perth Motorplex Top Doorslammer Summer Slam Championship behind Daniel Gregorini and was also second at the ANDRA Westernationals Top Doorslammer event.

400 Thunder PRO SLAMMER CHAMPIONSHIP

ROUND 1 14th July 2018 – NITRO UP NORTH – Hidden Valley Darwin

John Zappia begun the 2018/19 400 Thunder season in the strongest way possible, taking home the win defeating Paul Mouhayet in the final round with a 5.73 pass.

ROUND 2 2nd- 3rd November 2018 – EAST COAST THUNDER – Sydney Dragway

Zappia top qualified with a strong 5.66 pass in tricky conditions, but had his in car battery fail in Round 1 against Trevor Smith during staging. Kelvin Lyle went on to win the event.

ROUND 3 5th January 2019 – NEW YEARS THUNDER – Willowbank Raceway

Zappia took two wins from three rounds after Top Qualifying with a 5.649, but a wild run in round two saw the Monaro cross the centre line and give up a potential final round place against eventual winner Paul Mouhayet.

ROUND 4 19th January 2019 – SANTOS SUPER THUNDER – Sydney Dragway
Zap Top Qualified with a 5.73 @ 252 mph but was left to rue what might have been when the crankshaft broke in Round 2 against Ben Bray – putting the car out for the rest of the event.

ROUND 5 4th May 2019 –NITRO THUNDER – Sydney Dragway

Zappia defeated Paul Mouhayet in a crowd-pleasing final, running a 5.65 to not only take the victory but also set low ET of the event.

ROUND 6 6th – 9th June 2019 – WINTERNATIONALS – Sydney Dragway

John’s season did not finish in the fashion he would have preferred, bowing out in the first round of the Winternationals at Willowbank Raceway. John qualified sixth with a 6.26 @ 250mph but was beaten by Scott Maclean in round 1 after he smoked the tyres on the hit.

Perth Motorplex Summer Slam Championship

Zappia Racing presented for four rounds of six round Summer Slam Series – a local Top Doorslammer series.

10th November 2018 – WA DRAG RACING CHAMPIONSHIPS – Perth Motorplex

Zap Top Qualified with a 5.77 and won the event by defeating Daniel Gregorini in the final after running a stunning 5.66 in an earlier elimination round.

2ND February 2019 – NITRO NIGHT – Perth Motorplex

Zap took another win in the Summer Slam by defeating Daniel Gregorini again in the final with a 5.707 after qualifying second in the field of four cars.

23rd March 2019 – NITRO HOTRODS – Perth Motorplex

A 5.72 earned Zap Top Qualifier position but lost the final against Mark Chapman when he popped the burst panel at the 1,000ft mark enabling Mark Chapman to drive around him.

6th – 7th April 2019 – GRAND FINALS – Perth Motorplex

Qualified 2nd with a 5.770 – then a 5.724 in the final against Daniel Gregorini gave him the event win.

 

ANDRA Top Doorslammer

2nd – 3rd March 2019 – WESTERNATIONALS – Perth Motorplex

Zappia Top Qualified with a 5.722, and got to the final where Daniel Gregorini turned the tables and holeshot won with a 5.756 to Zap’s 5.753.

Zappia Racing have decided to sit out the Grudge Kings event on July 6th at Sydney Dragway, with end of season maintenance and more R&D to start the next season fresh and ready to go.
