Can-Am Stock/SS Series Wraps!
By: Bruce Biegler
The 14th season for the very popular Eastern Canada-base Can-Am Stock/Super Stock series wrapped up on Oct. 17th with it’s final event of the season held at Cayuga Dragway….
The event lived up to all expectations and more.
First, the points championship was far from decided going into the race. Second, the great fall weather and well prepped track made for great racing. And, finally, the circuit had an all-time (single race) competitor attendance of 54 entries.
Early in eliminations, the points leaders, Rob Becker, Rob Carpenter, Vince Giglio, and Tony Valerio all fell during the second round. Meanwhile, Chuck Nagy and Victoria Smith were eliminating the rest of the competition while advancing to the championship final round.
In that showdown, Chuck Nagy (from Niagara On The Lake) wheeled his cool Chevy Sonoma to victory hitting a winning 10.05 secs at 117.55 mph to win over Victoria Smith Sunfire GT. Smith did have a better starting line R/T (.036) but was forced to shut off at mid track. The 1-2 finish did move both Nagy and Smith into a final “top 10” points finish for the season.
Amazingly after the 10-race 2010 season series there were three different drivers tried for the overall points championship. Ontario Camaro pilots Rob Becker, Rob Carpenter and Vince Giglio all finished with idential 18 points season totals and will thus share the season’s overall honors. No less then five drivers title for the 6th slot in final points standings, another testiment to the overall competitiveness of the series.
Officially — the 2010 points tally was :
Name Points Finish
Rob Becker 18 1st
Rob Carpenter 18 1st
Vince Giglio 18 1st
Tony Valerio Jr 17 4th
Jamie Wildgoose 15 5th
