Ontario’s Canada Heads Up circuit got off to a season start at fabled Cayuga Dragway (TMP) last weekend….

After losing their first scheduled race for 2021 (due to provincial COVID protocol) – the series was able to complete their first calendar race — despite an initial gloomy weather forecast.

The season icebreaker included a mix of performance highlights as well as some unexpected winners.

The marquee CHU classes were real “Super Chevy Shows” — featuring wins by brand drivers Wade Stevens (Pro 10.5), Ed Szram (Super Street) and Matt Glassford (EZ Street).

Wade Stevens wheeled this ultra cool Chevelle to victory in Pro 10.5 racing at the CHU season opener.

Stevens (from Queensville ON), driving a history rich ’68 Chevelle (formally raced by Rocky Delicce) that is now owned by Luc Querin, scored his first CHP title on a single – running a 4.642 secs at 154.42 mph in the final round.

Szram (from Mount Albert ON) scored in the Super Street division with his ’69 Camaro – topping the very quick Toyota Supra owned by Ryan Sammit for the championship.

Ed Szram collected the title for Super Street class racing.
Defending 2020 event winner Matt Glassford (from Burlington ON) had a successful title defence for EZ Street.

Glassford – this defending event champion from 2020 – got his EZ Street season off to a good start when he wheeled his ’72 Nova past Vince Melao’s Mustang in the final.  Glassford was arguably the most consistent car on the Cayuga premises this weekend — running four (very near identical) consecutive 4.7 secs runs during eliminations.

Canadian fast street car powerhouse Nick Agostino was the quickest car overall at the CHP event (4.381 secs) but remarkably did not find victory lane this time out.

Motorcycle racing included some serious headline making courtesy of Jesse VanBetlehem – from Oakville ON.  Jesse won the KOTS title rather handily – including a number of 200+ mph runs with his street legal Suzuki GSXR1000 — the fastest being an amazing 204.77 mph!

Jesse VanBetleham was WOW in KOTS!

Other winners were Jeff Biro (Street 275), Nick Kempers (Stock Wheel Base Bike) and Murray Lonsbary (Crazy 8’s Bike).  Index titles went to Frank March (5.50), Mike Thompson (6.0) and Jay Lightheart (6.50).

The CHU weekend also featured and included many of Cayuga’s own regular racers — from its ET racing brand RCSS.

Chris VanBaalen (from Welland Point) took two wins with his Chevy Monte Carlo (Mod and Super Pro on Sunday).  Tony Valerio (Mod) and Yvon Maurte (Super Pro) scored Saturday evening wins. Junior Dragster titles went to Kami Scott and Cole Ferri.

Chris VanBaalen (from Welland Point ON) had two wins in his MonteCarlo .

The CHU series will return to Cayuga Dragway again soon – coming July 10-11th.
