This year, the veteran Super Stock driver will achieve his 40th anniversary in the sport of drag racing (!)

The soft spoken racer continues to remain highly active on the NHRA Super Stock racing circuit campaigning a Ed Quay-built Pontiac Grand-Am in conjunction with his wife Nancy.   That car which Thomas first acquired in 2007, replaced his very familiar all white ’87 Camaro which he campaigned for 15 seasons.

Thomas’ Grand-Am features a home-built and highly massaged 400 CID Chevrolet engine and depending on weight, Don runs the car in GT/CA or GT/DA trim.   To date the car has a best run of 9.68 secs at 137.5 mph in “C”.

Don has has enjoyed great success since switching to the Pontiac that includes winning NHRA divisional races at Mission BC and Bakersfield CA last summer. Thomas finished 8th in final Divisional points in 2010.

“The car is very reliable and it’s pretty much where we want it to be,” Thomas stated.  “It’s not really a record setter – we just focus on being consistent and competitive.”

Don and Nancy have an extensive season schedule planned for 2011 (14 NHRA races) including 8 divisional and 6 national events.
