Some late season Canadian drag racing scene tidbits presented by KHR…..

Proud Pomona Placing! – The last NHRA national event for 2021 did include a very inspiring and rewarding effort for the Paton Racing team! Their late season (initial 3 race alignment) including driver Cameron Ferre produced some great dividends including a “final four” placing at NHRA’s Auto Club Finals last weekend. That event featured a career quick 3.796 secs for Cameron and decisive round wins over Leah Pruett and Clay Millican. The now EMPI-sponsored team lost a heart-wrenching decision in the semis – barely losing to event winner Steve Torrence (3.813 secs to 3.831 secs). “It was a great weekend — we ended the season on a high note!” stated a very satisfied team co-owner Todd Paton.
Top Three Finish — BC-based powerhouse TAD class racer Shawn Cowie wrapped up his 2021 season at the NHRA Auto Club finals. Although he did not win this time out (lost in round two – tire shake) Shawn was the 4th quickest qualifier in the Mundies Towing & Recovery dragster at 5.216 secs. Cowie – who had finished 2nd in final NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series World Championship chases (four straight seasons) was 3rd for the final points tally for 2021 – just behind lady racers Rachel Meyer and Jackie Fricke.
Track Record Talk – Edmonton-native “Flyin’ Ryan” Bell grabbed some prestige during the Steve Gibb’s Nitro Revival event held at Irwindale California in late October. Racing his NA 10.5 classed Corvette (which is based in Phoenix) the Canadian racer broke his own my track record again – which he originally set back in June at 5.08 secs — when he lowered it to a 5.00 secs. Racing against 17 other cars in his class, Ryan advanced to the 4th round (final 3 cars) before a major oil down (by the ‘Famous’ Hemi Under Glass exhibition car) unfortunately collided with the track’s strict 5:00 pm curfew resulting in the last 3 racers standing splitting the class prize money.
On Top at Tuscon — Calgary-based index racing experts Ken Mostowich and his right hand man Charlie Marsh did enjoy an impressive conclusion to their pandemic condensed 2021 season. On October 16 they were the winners in the Super Comp category during the NHRA Pacific Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series race held at Tuscon Dragway in Arizona. That was Mostowich’s 7th career win at the LODRS event level. The team then followed that up with a superb runner-up finish during the final NHRA national event of the season — the Auto Club Finals at Pomona (last weekend) — losing by a narrow 8.904 to 8.908 secs to Cody Perkins.
Some Stock TakingBob Gullett (from Calgary) also had a very impressive event effort during the NHRA Tuscon LODRS event. Bob first wheeled his F/S Chevy to the class win for (Stick Combo) on Saturday and then followed that up on Sunday (Oct 15th) with an overall runner-up placing for the event’s Stock eliminator title. Bob had qualified his ’68 Nova #5/46 cars entered.
