Some significant recent happenings within Canada 9.90 index class are highlighted…..
Renfrew Ontario’s Charlie Kenopic (near lane) scored over a highly competitive Super Gas program during the NHRA Lucas Oil Divisional Race held at Maple Grove Raceway on May 26th. Kenopic notched his 3rd career NHRA Lucas Oil Divisional victory when he beat opponent Leonard Marshall in the final round battle of ’63 Corvettes. In the six and final round — Charlie’s superior .018 RT made his 9.936 secs run a winner over Marshall’s 9.931 secs.
Regina’s Bill Cawsey qualified for and raced for the second year in a row at the highly prestigious Jegs Allstars event held at Chicago’s Route 66 Raceway last weekend. Cawsey, who is a diesel tech at Bennett-Dunlop Ford (in Regina) drove his very reliable 2009 bodied Mustang at the event. Bill won his first round over Aaron Kinard but then lost out to eventual winner John Labbous Jr., in the semi final round – with a too quick 9.882 secs compared to to Labbous’s winning 9.905 secs.
Calgary’s Ken Mostowich was a 2nd Canadian racer who qualified for the 2019 Jegs Allstars event. Mostowich who was in fact the defending 2018 event champ — did have a very trying time — just getting to the event! His rig – containing both his race cars broke down earlier in the week and he was forced to scramble and borrow a car (from Idaho’s Don Anderson) to enter the event. Ken won his first round (over Pat Martin) however some unfamiliarity with the borrowed Corvette in round two resulted in a way too quick 9.815 secs versus Iggie Boicesco.
And coming soon to Super Gas and as well as ET Bracket racing is this impressive new C7 from Quebec — the Beaulieu-Poitras Racing 2019 Corvette Roadster. Driven by Kevin Poitras the car was built by Brian Bell at Dan Page Race Cars and features a 632 cid Dart motor by Steve Schmidt. Poitras and racing partner Jay Beaulieu will first focus on the Bracket Super Tour events in Eastern Canada but also plan on getting into the waters for NHRA’s Lucas Oil Drag Racing Super Gas by the end of the year. Kevin’s sponsors are Octane Performance Center, Auto-Moteur engine machine shop, NAPA Auto Parts RDL and ‘’The Boss’’ Claude Beaulieu.
