For the 4th consecutive season – Ontario’s iconic Cayuga Dragway will host a NHRA National Open….
The NHRA will return to TMP (Toronto Motorsports Park’s Cayuga Dragway) in Cayuga, Ontario — this coming May 31st-June 2nd — as part of the NHRA Northeast Division National Open Series.
TMP’s meet is the first of six events in the 2019 series, sponsored by electronic retailer P.C. Richard. & Son and will include Stock, Super Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street, as well as Race Cayuga Sportsman Series action.
“We are very pleased to be once again hosting another year at Cayuga Dragway TMP,”stated NHRA Division One Director Dave Mohn. “TMP is one of the nicer facilities in the Division, they have the resources, and have made this event extremely successful every year. We have looked forward to the continued growth of this event since we started it, and it continues to prove itself.”
Headlining the event will be NHRA Stock & Super Stock – class cars. A wide variety of cars are expected, including Chevrolet COPO Camaros, Ford Cobra Jets, and FCA (Chrysler) Drag Pak factory-built race cars. Stock and Super/Stock racers will be competing for valuable Championship Points and Awards in the new 3-race Stock/Super/Stock Canadian Series, presented by John Scotti Classic Cars. Neale Armstrong, Director of Drag Racing Operations at Toronto Motorsports Park, always looks forward to the yearly return of a NHRA Divisional racing at Cayuga. “This is the closest to the old WCS Divisional events we held back in the 70’s and 80’s”, noted Armstrong. “I have always enjoyed watching Super Stock, some of the best racers in the world, putting on a great show with their fantastic wheel stands, and tight races. The cars still look close to what they did when they came off the showroom floor. It’s an event that any true drag racing fan shouldn’t miss.”
Cayuga racing legend, multiple award-winning chassis builder, Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame, and Canadian Drag Racing Hall of Fame member Fred “FJ” Smith, who also helps organize the long-standing Can-Am Stock/Super Stock Series, and whose daughter Victoria is a former Can-Am Champion, is very excited about the race. “It’s great to have this event in Cayuga every year, an event like this really belongs here. With the talent in our own local series, mixed in with the best in the world, is always a fantastic event”.
Toronto Motorsports Park CEO Uli Bieri is thrilled to host The NHRA National Open. “We are honored, to have our National Open back in Cayuga and Toronto Motorsports Park. I would like to thank David Mohn, the NHRA and our sponsors for working together with TMP to provide the racing fans of Southern Ontario this amazing event. The National Open is a great part of our 2019 racing schedule. The TMP team is already preparing, as we are expecting upwards of 400-plus competitors for the event and look forward to presenting a spectacular weekend to our fans and competitors.”
The National Open will be held May 31- June 2 with race gates opening on Friday, May 31 at 8am. Open testing starts Friday at 1pm. Time trials and eliminations will take place both Saturday, June 1 and Sunday, June 2, beginning at 10:00 am.
