Fast Tracking Team Heads Home
This coming weekend’s Stratford Spectacular Hot August Nationals at Grand Bend Motorplex will include a homecoming of sorts. The return of Spiro Kontos’s TAFC team to Canadian soil will be one of many event attractions…
Spiros’ KonRodz Racing Chevy Monte Carlo is scheduled to match race another premium Canadian TAFC — Larry Dobbs’ potent Pontiac Firebird which is now driven by London’s Paul Noakes.
Kontos’ Maple Ontario-based team has during recent times been highly active on the NHRA event circuit stateside. With talented and up-and-coming driver Cassie Simonton (from Ohio) at the controls, and with reputed tuner Randy Anderson (from California) calling the shots, this team is for sure one of the most improved groups overall out there.
During the NHRA Gatornationals earlier this season the team was rewarded with a super competitive 5.56 secs run at 261+ mph — one of the all time quick and fast runs by a Canadian car in the category. Since then they have gone rounds at both the national event and LODRS event levels. All of that is a clear indicator as to just how vastly different this race team operation is compared to say just two years ago.
“It’s been a while since we’ve raced in Canada – we’ve been so busy on the divisional and national event circuits,” said Spiro Kontos, the owner and operator of Recyco Environmental and Direct Waste Systems Inc companies. “I felt it was important and I really wanted to come back to Canada and reconnect with all our friends and fans. We are bringing back a vastly different race car which has stepped up at every level. I’m very proud of the progress we have made and I am looking forward to showing that to the Canadian fans.”
Spiro and his group are pumped about their upcoming weekend experience at Grand Bend Motorplex, which is the facility they first got their start.
“The Stratford Spectacular event is a perfect fit for us,” Spiro added. “We are going to bring our best equipment and put on a good show. It’s important to me to prove a point and to show everyone just how far we have come and that we are a force to be reckoned with.”
Kontos was also quick to cite the support he has received from valued sponsors Lucas Oil Canada and NGK spark plugs during his team’s rise.
“I want to thank them and also DragRaceCanada.com (Thanks Spiro!) for all the support,” Spiro insisted. “They have been there for us consistently and all of that has helped to bring us up to this next level.”
The two TAFC teams are scheduled to face off 3X this coming weekend. Those showdowns will happen twice on Saturday (4:00 and 7:00 PM) and then once again on Sunday (1:00 PM). (Note: times are approximate)
