Countdown Heats Up after Dallas Event

(Pro Racing Summary – Courtesy Anthony Vestal)

Tony Schumacher raced to the Top Fuel victory Sunday at the O’Reilly Super Start Batteries NHRA Fall Nationals at the Texas Motorplex.

Matt Hagan, Greg Anderson and LE Tonglet also were winners in their respective categories at the NHRA Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship playoff event at the famed all-concrete dragstrip that sits just south of Dallas.

Schumacher scored his fifth win of the season and first in the playoffs by outrunning Shawn Langdon in the final round. Schumacher posted a performance of 3.838 seconds at 320.43 mph in his U.S. Army dragster to hold off Langdon’s Lucas Oil/Speedco dragster, which trailed with a 3.908 at 298.67 in his second-career final.

Tony Schumacher earned a "Texas Size" TF win

With the victory, Schumacher took advantage of a second-round loss by rival Larry Dixon and now trails the series leader by 94 points with three playoff races remaining in the season. Cory McClenathan, who lost to Schumacher in the semis, is second overall in the point standings, 69 behind Dixon.

“When Dixon goes out [like he did today], you absolutely have to rise to the occasion and win and put some pressure back on him,” said Schumacher of his fifth Texas Motorplex victory and 66th win of his career.  “I wish we could have done this a race or two earlier, but we didn’t and Dallas is a great place to start. It’s the site of my first career Top Fuel win. We’re only down [94] points with three races to go. I’ve been down a lot further than that. What NHRA and Full Throttle did was to make it this way, make it last all the way to the end.  I’m in a happy place right now. Not where I want to be yet, but a lot better place than I was at 9 a.m. this morning.”

Hagan made a major move in the playoffs by earning his third Funny Car win of the season. The Virginia cattle rancher powered his DieHard Dodge Charger to a 4.155 at 294.63 to beat series leader John Force, whose Castrol GTX High Mileage Ford Mustang lost traction near mid-track and finished in 4.491 at 203.74.

Hagan, who qualified 14th, took the long road to the victory by knocking off early round foes Jeff Arend, Cruz Pedregon and Ashley Force Hood to advance to the final. With the win Hagan moves into second place and trails Force by 25 points.

“I left the line and never saw [Force in the final],” Hagan said, “but I was listening for him and looking over. I about hit the wall because I jumped up out of the [roof hatch] while it was still moving because it was overwhelmingly exciting. Coming in here [qualified] 14th and having to do a pedal job just to get into the show — it’s great to get the win. We definitely stepped up and did what we had to do, because coming in 14th you have to wonder how long your day is going to be, but we had confidence in [crew chief] Tommy DeLago tuning the car.”

Matt Hagan crept closer to John Force in the FC Championship chase

Anderson overcame a near-perfect reaction time (.001) from Mike Edwards to claim his second consecutive playoff victory in Pro Stock. Anderson pushed his Summit Racing Pontiac GXP to a performance of 6.585 at 209.39 to drive around Edwards’ Penhall/Interstate Batteries GXP at the finish line.

“I had a big weekend last weekend and got myself back in the Countdown,” Anderson said. “Every race you go to is sudden death out here. If you have a really bad race you can knock yourself completely out of it. You just can’t make a mistake, and my team has been flawless for two races now and I’m so proud of them.”

With the win three-time world champ Anderson — who beat Ronnie Humphrey, top qualifier Allen Johnson and rookie Shane Gray in early rounds — cuts Edwards’ series lead to 16 points.

“We’ve got a serious chance at getting the championship back and I really had doubts a few races back,” said the three-time world champ, who hasn’t won the title since 2005. “The guys are giving me a race car every race that I can win with now. We’re still not in the lead after back-to-back wins and that just goes to show you how tough this class is and how tough Mike Edwards is. We’re going to have to find a way to take that trophy from him; he’s not going to give it up. He’s the champion for a reason. He’s a great racer, he’s got a great team, he’s got a great hot rod, and he just doesn’t make many mistakes. The good news is we’re kind of peaking at the right time. We’re a threat to win every race now and we’re threat to win the championship.”

Rookie Tonglet continued his hot streak in Pro Stock Motorcycle, winning his third consecutive playoff race over Andrew Hines. Hines fouled with a red-light start on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson and gave NitroFish Gear Suzuki rider Tonglet the automatic win.

Tonglet, who covered the distance in 6.972 at 187.94, cut Hines’ series lead to 44 points with the victory.

LE Tonglet continued his amazing surge in Pro Stock Motorcycle

“For him to go up there and red-light, you know that he had to be thinking about the pressure,” said Tonglet, who defeated Angie Smith, Karen Stoffer and Eddie Krawiec in the first three rounds. “It’s just unreal. When I saw the red-light and knew I was the winner even before I reached the finish line was really great. I try not to think too much about the pressure, but it’s there. We were just happy to be in the semis, and the win just made everything all that much better.”

The event's NHRA Lucas Oil Sportsman Champions celebrated

The fourth of six playoff events in the NHRA Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship will be held Oct. 7-10 with the Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway near Reading, Pa.

Double-Up Wins Highlight ADRL Ohio Stop

Two of the top competitors in the American Drag Racing League (ADRL) showed exactly why they reign atop their respective classes during the 2010 Summit Racing Equipment Ohio Drags IV.

Extreme Pro Stock driver Cary Goforth and Pro Extreme Motorcycle rider Ashley Owens both won for the second time in two nights to stay No. 1 in their divisions, capping off a memorable double-race weekend at Summit Motorsports Park.

“To get two wins is just really, really awesome,” said Goforth, who won the rain-delayed  Dragstock VII on Friday. “Awesome won’t even cover it. This is just wonderful. You always dream about something like this, but you don’t always get it.”

Cary Goforth won 2X in at ADRL Norwalk

Two other drivers got a chance to celebrate for the first time in the ADRL, as Mick Snyder (Pro Extreme) and Jim Laurita (Pro Nitrous) both picked up their first career ADRL wins.  Chuck Ulsch picked up his third win of the 2010 season in Extreme 10.5 and Morgan Benfield got the win in Pro Junior Dragster.

In every respect, the Ohio Drags IV was a memorable event, in part because of Goforth and Owens’ continued dominance.

Owens won for an unprecedented eighth time this season and also became the first ADRL competitor in its history to win five straight races.

“You never take any of these for granted,” Owens said. “There’s so much that can happy, you just have to enjoy it.”

PXM racer Ashley Owens continued is dominating ADRL season

In getting his second double-win weekend this year, Owens handed more heartache to Canada’s Terry Schweigert (Abbotsford BC).  Owens went 4.03 in the finals, going a PXM-best 178.28 miles per hour to beat Schweigert in the finals for the fourth time in 2010.

Owens and his Fast by Gast team also had to overcome replacing the motor after the second-round run. It didn’t seem to bother him, as Owens went 4.09 in a semifinal victory.

Goforth was on point all weekend in XPS, reclaiming the points lead after winning Dragstock on Friday. He followed it up by going 4.11 to beat John Montecalvo in Saturday’s final.  Goforth went as quick as 4.05 and was consistently impressive for the second straight day in picking up his third win this season.

“I’ve got a good crew and that’s the truth,” Goforth said. “We had a consistent car, but it was also consistently faster and quicker than anybody out there this weekend.”

Snyder gave the capacity crowd at Summit Motorsports Park a thrilling show in the PX final, as he nearly crossed the center line before blowing a header in an electrifying run against Alex Hossler.

Mick Snyder (near lane) won his first career PX title

Snyder went 3.95, but couldn’t celebrate his first ADRL win until replays showed he didn’t move into the right lane.

“I wasn’t sure if I crossed or not. I knew I was close and I was waiting for someone to let me know,” Snyder said. “If you’re going to win, you might as well do it in spectacular fashion.”

Snyder went 3.66 in the first round and then had back-to-back 3.68s to reach the finals – including a victory against points leader Joshua Hernandez – ending his rookie season in PX in thrilling fashion.

The win made Laurita’s year, which, like Snyder, is also his first in the ADRL.

On a day filled with upsets and the unbelievable – points leader Rickie Smith was one of many top drivers who did not qualify for eliminations – Laurita hung around and went 3.94 to beat Terry Housley in the finals.

Laurita did his part, going 4.00 in the second round to beat close friend John Decerbo and adding another 4.00 in a semifinal win against Robert Mathis, who upset No. 1 qualifier Pat Stoken in the first round.

That was simply par for the course on a wild day in Pro Nitrous, where the top eight in points changed multiple times throughout the day.

“It was just perseverance,” Laurita said. “We shook on every pass, but we were able to get through it.”

Ulsch got a red-light win against Dan Millen in the Extreme 10.5 final, but he wasn’t about to turn it down after his team worked vigorously to repair his car after the semifinals.

Extreme 10.5 winner - Chuck Ulsch

Millen had set a new world E.T. record with a 3.78 and consistently ran in the low 3.80s during eliminations.  It was enough to get him into the top eight in the points standings in XTF, but Ulsch was the one with the Minuteman trophy afterwards.

“We were off here and Dan is the cream of the crop,” Ulsch said. “You couldn’t mess with it. But we’ve got (3.80s) in us and now we have a month to find it.”

Morgan Benfield became the first Pro Junior Dragster driver in ADRL history to win three races.

The ADRL closes out the 2010 season with the LenMar Motorsports ADRL World Finals VI, which feature the famous Speedtech “Battle For The Belts.” The top eight in each class qualify for a chance at a world title. The event takes place on Oct. 22-23 at Texas Motorplex in Ennis, TX.

Rain Delayed ADRL Dragstock Wraps up at Norwalk

By:  Josh Hachat

Just moments after watching his son, Ty, win in Pro Junior Dragster at the completion of the rain deferred American Drag Racing League (ADRL) Simpson Dragstock VII, Todd Tutterow had only one thought before his Pro Extreme final.
I just knew I needed to do my job,” said Tutterow, the 2009 World Champion.  Tutterow followed suit, beating Joshua Hernandez with a 3.85 in the Pro Extreme final at Summit Motorsports Park to give the Tutterow family two memorable wins in one night.
“This is wonderful,” Tutterow said. “It is very special when you got your family with you for something like this.”

Other winners at Dragstock VII, which was completed on Friday after rain postponed the event two weeks ago in Rockingham, included Doug Riesterer (Pro Nitrous), Spiro Pappas (Extreme 10.5), Ashley Owens (Pro Extreme Motorcycle), Cary Goforth (Extreme Pro Stock) and Ty Tutterow (Pro Junior Dragster).

The fantastic day of racing also served as an ideal prelude to the finish of the Summit Racing Equipment Ohio Drags IV, which was held the next day (Sep. 25th).

Tutterow might have punched his ticket after starting the day eighth in points in PX. But he put forth a yeoman’s effort on Friday, beating No. 1 qualifier Frankie Taylor, teammate KH Al-Thani and points leader Hernandez in consecutive rounds to earn the win.

Todd Tutterow won ADRL's prestigous DragStock PX title

Taylor went 3.67 in their second-round matchup, but Tutterow cut a .005 light and went 3.73 to earn the holeshot win that spearheaded his title run.
“I knew I had to get Frankie at the line,” Tutterow said. “We made some good runs and had some lucky runs. The main thing was just getting down the track.”
Riesterer knocked off his own share of big names in Pro Nitrous and went 4.09 to beat Stan Allen in the finals.
“We came out here hoping to go a few rounds and have a chance to get into the ‘Battle For The Belts,’” Riesterer said. “I never expected this in a million years. When I won, it didn’t even hit me that I won Dragstock. It’s a dream to win this race.”
Riesterer beat No. 1 qualifier Shannon Jenkins in the second round and 2009 World Champion Khalid Al-Balooshi in the semifinals, moving to 10th in the points with Saturday’s race remaining.
“We made some good calls and we did way more than I could have hoped for,” Riesterer said. “We just need to keep winning.”
Pappas was just glad to get back to his winning ways for the first time in 2010.  The 2009 Extreme 10.5 World Champion had his share of difficulty through a trying summer, but he proved he’s back in the mix by going 4.15 to beat surprise finalist Brad Brand in the title round.

Extreme 10.5 Winner - Spiro Pappas

“We are finally on the right track,” Pappas said. “We did some testing and we’re back where we need to be.”

Pappas earned his second career win and denied Brand his first ADRL win even though Pappas pulled back on the power during the finals.

“We really backed off on the engine and it paid off for us,” Pappas said.
Brand had a major upset in the semifinals, getting a holeshot win against Billy Glidden, who went a career-best 3.96 during the run.

Owens continued to be bulletproof in Pro Extreme Motorcycle, beating Kim Morrell for the second straight race, this time by going 4.05 to once again deny Morrell her first ADRL win.

“The bike felt good and everything felt smooth out there,” Owens said. “I thought it might go a little faster, but it was a good smooth day.”

The win is Owens’ seventh in eight races during 2010 and it is also his fourth straight victory.

Goforth re-took the points lead in Extreme Pro Stock, beating Cale Aronson on a holeshot in the finals. Aronson went 4.09 in his second straight finals appearance, but Goforth went .009 off the line and finished with a 4.10 for his second win this season.

“In my mind, I should have 2-3 more wins this year,” Goforth said. “In St. Louis, I was late off the line against Brian (Gahm) and I really steamed about that. I really made an effort to drive like I can.”

Goforth was consistent all day and that was key in avoiding the upsets that knocked John Montecalvo and Brian Gahm out in the second round. As a result, Goforth moved past both drivers in the points standings.

“We had three 4.11s in a row and that’s just a tribute to our team. The car fell out of the trailer running fast,” Goforth said. “We had the car to beat all night.”

Ty Tutterow went 8.03 to earn a red-light win against Trevor Wilson in Pro Junior Dragster.

DIXON EXTENDS AWESOME TF STREAK

(Pro Racing Summary – Courtesy of Scott Smith)

Larry Dixon continued his incredible season in Top Fuel and is a perfect 11 for 11 in final rounds as he won the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals at zMax Dragway.

Also taking home wins at the event in their respective categories were Cruz Pedregon (FC), Greg Anderson (PS), LE Tonglet (PSM) and Melanie Troxel (PM).

Dixon faced Doug Kalitta’s Rocky Boots Dragster in the finals and as he has done 11 times this season he was able to get the win light and take the victory.  Dixon and his Al-Anabi Racing dragster ran 3.858 at 316.60 mph to a losing pass of 3.901 at 309.20 mph by Kalitta.  Dixon also extends his lead in the points by 85 over second place racer Cory McClenathan.  This is also the third consecutive win for Dixon.

Larry Dixon is "white hot" in NHRA Top Fuel racing

“I can’t believe the amount of wins we’ve had and the amount of finals we’ve been in without losing,” said Dixon. “It’s hard to imagine when you think about all the great cars that are out here. It’s a credit to the team. They are an unbelievable bunch of guys. As a fan of this sport, I realize how hard it is.”

The day wasn’t without trouble for the team when Dixon smoked the tires early in the second round  and pedal the car when he was facing defending Top Fuel series champion, Tony Schumacher.

“I guess we win ‘em every different way. The race against Tony [Schumacher] was amazing. There is a period of about two-tenths of a second when I was off the throttle and it was quiet that I could tell it was quiet in the other lane, too. I had a 50-percent chance of hitting it right. Tony is still wearing no. 1, and he’ll continue to do so until someone takes it away from him.”

Pedregon and his Snap-On Tools Toyota Camry was the class of the Funny Car field all weekend long and was able to use his No. 1 qualifying position to his advantage and secured the win over Jack Beckman in his Valvoline / Mail Terminal Services Dodge Charger Funny Car.  In the finals Pedregon posted a winning run of 4.171 seconds at 299.13 mph to a trailing 4.212 seconds at 301.81 of Beckman.  This was the first win by Pedregon since his victory at the last race of the season in Pomona in 2008 and today was his birthday as well.

Cruz Pedregon won FC from the pole at ZMax

“I’ve had some great cars in my career when I drove for guys like Larry Minor and Joe Gibbs, but I don’t think I’ve been in a better car than I had this weekend,” said an emotional Pedregon. “I can’t say enough about the team. Me and [crew chief] Danny DeGennaro, who’s a young guy in his 30s, were both kind of on the sidelines this offseason. We worked real hard to get to this point. It took us awhile to get going, and there were times when I thought, ‘What the heck are we doing this for?’ but we stayed at it.

“Our philosophy is to look at these races like we’re in the Countdown. I’ve been a champion twice before, and I need to act like a champion. Even though some people were surprised by us, we’re not coming into races thinking we’re underdogs. We had a great weekend. I’m afraid to change the oil on it before Dallas.”

Hometown Pro Stock racer Anderson used the support of friends, family and horsepower of his Summit Racing Pontiac GXP to get his third win of the season as he bested the Nitro Fish Apparel Pontiac GXP driver by Greg Stanfield in the finals.  Anderson recorded a time of 6.604 seconds at 209.30 mph to the losing 6.651 at 207.91 mph.  With the win Anderson moves to second in the Pro Stock category.

Greg Anderson scored a hometown win in Pro Stock

“This is not how we planned it, to have all three Summit cars on one side of the ladder but that’s how it fell. When you have three great cars on one side, you have a good shot to get one into the final. We made a couple mistakes on the other two cars and I feel bad for Jason and Ronnie. Otherwise, we could have done more,” stated Anderson.   “Today I had the best hot rod on the grounds, by far. I’m a lucky man. This is my home track, and I have struggled here but zMax Dragway is now officially my favorite track. Heck, I didn’t even know where the press room was until this weekend but now I want to race here ten times a year.

“In the final, I made one of the most perfect runs I’ve ever made. It was so smooth. I thought, if I lose this race on a holeshot I’ll never be able to live with myself. Apparently I put too much pressure on myself. Sometimes you can press too hard and make mistakes. I had to treat this like another event and it all went smooth.”

In a rematch from the Mac Tools U. S. Nationals, Tonglet and his Nitro Fish Apparel Suzuki faced Andrew Hines on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley Davidson in the finals for the second consecutive race.  Tonglet posted a run of 6.921 seconds at 192.82 mph to the losing run of Hines 6.972 at 189.63.  With the win Tonglet moves into the Pro Stock Motorcycle points lead by 66 points over Hines.

“We’re not even thinking about the Rookie of the Year anymore. We’ve got a bigger thing; the championship, on our minds. With Nitro Fish behind us, we have a good shot. Hopefully, we just keep going rounds and we can run this good in Dallas,” said Tonglet.  “I’m happy to be in the final again. We said we just wanted to get to the semi’s. Anything after that is a bonus. After the semi’s, I was on the return road and GT said we’re going to tune it up. We had been spinning the tire. We leaned it out a little more and it picked up a lot for the final. I’m still trying to believe that this is all happening.  I owe it all to Kenny [Koretsky]. Without him, we wouldn’t be here.”

The NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series season continues on Sept. 23 – 26 during the O’Reilly Super Start Batteries NHRA Fall Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec at the Texas Motorplex.

TROXEL GSA WIN – HER FIRST!

NHRA fan favorite, and highly versatile racer Melanie Troxel got her first win in the Get Screened America Pro Mod Drag Racing Series at the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals on Sunday.

In the finals Troxel had a single run as Scott Ray wasn’t able to make it to the line after he suffered an engine explosion in the semi-finals.  Troxel still posted a strong number in the finals during a run of 5.938 seconds at 245.94 mph.  Troxel now has wins in Funny Car, Top Fuel, Top Alcohol dragster and Pro Mod.

“I don’t really focus on the female aspect of things but for me to win in four different categories in the NHRA is pretty special,” said Troxel following the win.  “To be honest I don’t know if I will be running Pro Mod next year and I was starting to get a little worried that I have two more races left in the season and I was getting a little nervous about getting a win in before I might not run the class.  It was great for it to come today.

The championship battle is still alive as Von Smith will have to wait until the final race in Las Vegas to try to claim his first Get Screened America Pro Mod Series Championship.  Smith would have needed to win the race to claim the title but was defeated by Ray in the second round of eliminations.

Melanie Troxel added another page to her legacy on Sunday when she won the Get Screened America Pro Mod Series race at the O’Reilly Auto Parts Nationals at zMax Dragway in the In-N-Out Burger Camaro.

In the process, Troxel won an NHRA national event in a fourth different class. She’s now won in Pro Mod, Funny Car, Top Fuel and Top Alcohol Dragster.

For me to win in four different categories in the NHRA is pretty special,” Troxel said. “I’m not sure if I’m going to run Pro Mod next year, and I was starting to get a little worried.  I only had two more races left in the season. I was getting a little nervous about getting a win in. I wanted to get a win in the Pro Mod class before I retired from it.”

Troxel’s final round ended up being a victory lap of sorts. Her opponent, Scott Ray, suffered an engine explosion in the semifinals and was unable to make the call for the finals.

Troxel’s solo run was a 5.938-second pass at 245.94 mph, more than enough proof that the In-N-Out Burger Camaro was best in the class.

“For us, going out and running our best ET of the weekend in the finals took away a little of that sting. We said we were going to be tough to beat even if he was able to make it.”

She advanced to the finals when opponent Ed Hoover tripped the beams .019 seconds too early and fouled out. Troxel beat Rick Stivers in the second round with a 5.982 second run at 245.99 mph to Stivers’ 8.409 at 111.67 mph.

That wasn’t the only racing Troxel was doing on Sunday. She qualified the ProCare Rx Dodge Charger into the Funny Car field and started the day with a matchup against Tony Pedregon.  In that race, both cars dropped cylinders at nearly the same time, with Pedregon ultimately getting the upper hand with a winning run.

Canada’s Sterling Bridge Backs GSA Event

Canada’s Sterling Bridge Backs GSA Event

By:  Rob Geiger

As part of its continuing support of drag racing, Sterling Bridge, a Canadian-based commercial real estate investment company, has signed on as the presenting sponsor of this weekend’s Get Screened America Pro Mod Drag Racing Series event at zMax Dragway.

Sterling Bridge is a familiar name to Pro Mod fans through it’s primary sponsor of the ’67 Camaro driven by Danny Rowe, who is originally from Calgary AB.

Rowe is second in the current Pod Mod championship points and the Sterling Bridge hot rod carried the Southern Californian to the winner’s circle earlier this season in Houston.

Sterling Bridge was founded in 1999 and provides investment packages for its member companies.
