Super Gas Scorecard! Some big wins this month within NHRA’s demanding & highly competitive 9.90 Index racing!
Jason Kenny (originally from Kingston Ontario) earned his 6th career national event title — winning Super Gas at Minnesota’s Lucas Oil Nationals – just this past weekend.
Racing his very finely finessed Corvette roadster,  Jason was able to run down opponent Trevor Larson in the final round taking a 9.928 secs 151.34 mph to 9.949 secs 156.44 mph decision. Kenny, who qualified #6 entering eliminations, made a competition single in round one – before then lighting up his lane win-light five more times on Sunday.

Canadian racers – also driving Corvette replicate roadsters – took S/G titles both East and West this month within the NHRA’s Lucas Oil Divisional circuit.
Charlie Kenopic, (above – from Renfrew ON) scored a win at the NHRA Division One event held at Numedia, PA. Kenopic earned his 7th career title at that level when he prevailed in what was a “dead heat” final round over opponent Charles Yannetti — hitting a winning 9.922 secs 157.65 mph. Charlie had turned on 5 event win lights prior to that for the event.
2nd generation driver Josh Mellof (Maple Ridge BC – below) won his first ever NHRA Lucas Oil Divisional race when he raced his awesome ’57 Corvette to victory (August 11th)!  Josh, who is son to character Top Sportsman racer Joe Mellof, qualified #8 and then notched five round wins for the event held at Seattle area’s Pacific Raceways – defeating Randy Sides who broke out in the championship round.

Hot & Smokey Highlights! — Edmonton’s RAD Torque Raceway hosted a couple of independent races of note this month — with their Hot August Night and Smoked Out Shootout being presented. Both events highlighted Western talents within the X275 and in Pro Mod.
John Cuglietta (above) from Parkland County, AB doubled down on his X275 win at recent Rocky Mountain Nationals.   He picked up another at the Hot August Night’s X275 Chicago style shootout with his very quick turbocharged Mustang.

Mission Raceway’s initiated West Coast Outlaws Racing Series had their lone Alberta event during the Smoked Out Shootout . For that it was Rocky View, Alberta’s Tyler Stamler (above) who’s Chevy truck won the hotly contested X275 class title — for the second consecutive year.

Ryan Phaff towed in his full-size Chevy truck, that’s typically campaigned in Top Sportsman — and entered his first Pro Mod race at the Smoked Out Shootout. The Medicine Hat driver went on to win the Pro Mod, beating PM veteran Rick Barnhart in the finals.

Calgary, Alberta’s Matt Robert, who debuted a new Chevy S10 in Limited Street just last month also shined at Smoked Out. In what was only the second race with the truly neat new truck, he picked up the win in Limited Street over Brad Thomas.

Lucrative Visit! — Alberta’s Ryan O’Connor had a very successful entry within the recent NightFire Nationals event held at Firebird Raceway (Boise ID). The Lacombe-based ET racing specialist did pick up a huge $10G win during that event’s Friday Night racing schedule. With that and over the weekend, O’Conner drove his dragster down track 25x – participating in 23 elimination rounds — and while using Aaron Steinkey as a remote tuner. Ryan was also the winner for the event’s “Top Fire” race held on Saturday – a limited field featuring the quickest cars only. He went to round #6 for the $10K race Saturday and round #5 for the Sunday’s $10K race. Who says you can’t make money drag racing?

New Pro Mod Prowls! — Mission BC’s Jay Syvertsen, who is no stranger to Pro Mod racing within Western Canada, did provide the racing public its first view of his newest class effort — at RAD’s Hot August Night feature. The very tech savvy co-owner of J&S Powersports debuted a new 1959 Corvette that evening. Most of his career has been using supercharged motors, but in a change from that he is moving forward now with a twin turbo. That combination has several trick go-fast bits, including an electronic wastegate to control boost and allow the turbos to spool faster.  It’s maiden voyage down track did produce a very respective 4.26 secs 182.63 mph time slip.  Most definitely a car to watch and enjoy going forward!
